Donald Trump is a serious threat to our nation

Yesterday, Donald Trump reached a new and disturbing low when his campaign released this statement.

Donald J. Trump is calling for a total and complete shutdown of Muslims entering the United States until our country’s representatives can figure out what is going on.

He previously said he wanted surveillance conducted against mosques and is open to establishing a database for all Muslims living in the U.S.

If enacted, his policy would violate the Establishment Clause of the First Amendment of the Constitution which prohibits Congress from enacting any law that would establish or discriminate against a religion.

His policy smacks of demagoguery and is incredibly stupid and self-defeating.

Wikipedia reports,

As of 2010, over 1.6 billion or about 23.4% of the world population are Muslims. By the percentage of the total population in a region considering themselves Muslim, 24.8% in Asia-Oceania do, 91.2% in the Middle East-North Africa, 29.6% in Sub-Saharan Africa, around 6.0% in Europe, and 0.6% in the Americas.

The vast majority of Muslims are peace loving and the Muslim community in the United States is our best ally and source of information about radical jihadists..

From CNN

A look at polls and studies conducted in the last few years show that Muslims have been crucial in helping law enforcement find terror suspects in the United States. Many have served in the military protecting the country against terrorists. And in many ways, they’re a lot like other everyday Americans.

/snip/

It’s difficult to come by hard numbers because the U.S. Census doesn’t collect religious data. But the fear of Muslims taking over and imposing Sharia law is unfounded. By some estimates, Muslims make up less than 1% of the U.S. adult population. By 2050, their numbers will grow — to 2.1%. Of all the Muslims in America, 63% are exactly the kind Trump wants banned — immigrants.

/snip/

While in many parts of the Muslim world, women are confined to second-class status, that’s not the case among American Muslims. Virtually all of them (90%) agree that women should be able to work outside the home. American Muslim women hold more college or post-graduate degrees than Muslim men. And they are more likely to work in professional fields than women from most other U.S. religious groups.

/snip/

Since September 11, 2001, until the end of 2014, 109 Muslim-Americans plotted against targets in the United States. And terrorism by Muslim-Americans killed 50 in the same time period. Contrast that with the deaths from other mass shootings just last year: 136 – more than twice as many as all the deaths from 13 years of Muslim-American terrorism.

/snip/

After every terrorist attack at home and abroad, the refrain rises, “Where is the Muslim condemnation?” American Muslims have spoken out — and done much more.A Duke University study found more terrorism suspects and perpetrators were brought to the attention of law enforcement by members of the Muslim-American community than were discovered through U.S. government investigations. And a Pew survey found that roughly half of U.S. Muslims say their religious leaders aren’t speaking out enough against Islamic extremism.

Trump sounds more and more like Adolph Hitler in the late 1920s and early 1930s. He demonized Jews blaming them for all of Germany’s problems.

We must not venture down this path again.

Donal Trump is extremely dangerous.

Do you consider Tea-Rump a bigger threat than Tail Gunner Ted?

I’m afraid you are right .There are some crazy, dangerous, armed wingnuts out there. They love to believe all the lies they are fed. They DO think they have god on their side, so stupid. Trump has just come on, live speech, on Hardball. We just shake our heads in disbelief, don’t even waste our breath to cuss him anymore.

This was a reply to Malisha’s comment at the end, 4:54 p.m.

I have figured it out, Anita: you have to hit “REPLY” to the post you’re talking to and it will line up underneath slightly indented. If you do your own comment it flies to the top like a helium balloon!
        😆

Thanks, I thought I had hit reply, but I was on the tablet. I always make more mistakes on it. Much easier on the desktop keyboard for me 😊.

No doubt he is spouting scary Hitler-like stuff. Now doesn’t he make the rest of the Republican pack sound more rational and reasonable? I wouldn’t be at all surprised if he is setting the stage for a “rational and reasonable” Jeb Bush to come to the fore. Watch for it.

    • Malisha says:

That’s probably a great scenario but isn’t it a bit too intelligent for the Repugnicans to have come up with?

If they DID think that one up and if The Adolph DID go along with the plan for all these months to help the cause, then I am astonished that they were able to think, plan, and stay on course, because really, they are from a gang who couldn’t govern straight. Also, what role would Ben Carson have played in this?

For a long time I have been saying, “We are Rome.” And now I find myself saying, “I have no idea what we are.”

      • bettykath says:

I’m not suggesting that was the plan, just the possible result. Martin Luther King did his thing and was seen as a dangerous radical. Malcolm X did his thing and was seen as a more dangerous radical, making King almost acceptable. The different styles and rhetoric and their effect weren’t lost on Malcom. At some point I think that Trump will realize that 30% of 20% doesn’t equal a win. otoh, it could be that his ego will continue to smother his brain and he won’t “get” it..

It looks like Rubio may be toast. WayneMadsenReport says that Rubio has been having an affair with a lobbyist. I’m not sure how the “family values” folks feel about a married man with 4 kids sleeping with a lobbyist. Madsen says the information is from the Bush campaign. Never underestimate the entitled. They will do whatever to get their entitlement.

What Trump is doing is dining at the table that the Republicans in our country have prepared before him. THEY have been lying to the working class for half a century with the narrative about who is stealing from them. THEY have been playing “let’s you and him fight.” THEY have been breaking the unions and getting the populace enraged and feeling helpless and set-upon. And they are directing the resulting rage towards the scapegoats they have chosen. But they will choose scapegoats again and again, so long as they have power and need to keep their BIG LIE rolling and gathering momentum. “Hate the Muslims” will change quickly and morph into whatever kind of hatred suits them until we destroy ourselves. I really don’t care how predictable it is to compare someone like Trump with Adolph Hitler and I don’t care if it is cliche. Look at what happened in Germany: an advanced society with liberal structures that turned, in a few short decades, into a murderous psychopathic monster-nation requiring every inhabited continent to involve itself in turmoil and bloodshed (not to mention putting nearly all the normal activities of national growth and life on hold for a world war) before it came to its senses. HITLER HITLER HITLER, we should be shouting at Trump. We should NOT be reticent at calling him “a HITLER impersonator.” We should NOT be holding back for anything. He will take us to Hell with him if we do.

His hate speech is very dangerous. He is sickening. I hope he really takes the rest of republicans down with him. They created him & his followers, they deserve him. Rachel Maddow is coming on Lawrence O’Donnel’s show tonite to discuss their theory about what he’s really up to. Lawrence says he never wanted to be pres., knows can’t win. I agree. Great post, Prof. Thank you!

  6. Rachael says:

He terrifies me – the only thing that terrifies me more is that there are people who like him, people who believe in him, people who would vote for him. I find that even more scary. I can’t believe this is happening. Right before my eyes.

    • Malisha says:

To me, the fact that so many people are supportive of Donald Trump means that we already have the country we are afraid we will get if Trump wins (a) the Republican nomination and/or (b) the White House. You see, the numerically comparatively small bunch of people (1/3 of the Repugnicans, at last poll, I think) are also the biggest bullies, the most law-resistant, the most vocal, the best armed (they are all gun nuts!) and the most self-righteous (believing they have god on their side so whatever they do is automatically justified). Thus, that “small” group could completely take over our country because the majority is not as fanatical and not as aggressive as they are. Most people go ALONG with such bullies, if not to “keep the peace,” then to “avoid trouble.” NOT ONE POWERFUL REPUBLICAN has publicly repudiated and shamed Donald Trump for his fascist ravings, NOT ONE.

Not only would they all vote for him, they would GET OUT THE VOTE for him and they would put him in office illegally if necessary (as they put W in office) and they would destroy anybody who tried to stop him. Remember the “Brooks Brothers” riot attacking, punching and pummeling the vote-counters in Miami? That would nowadays look like child’s play if the Republicans were putting Trump into office and anybody protested. They’d be killed, railroaded, beaten half or all the way to death, terrorized, and annihilated economically and politically.

We are seeing the rise of a powerful, probably unstoppable combination here: Normal non-hostile, non-belligerent, unarmed people being taken over by a motivated, funded, well-oiled and heavily armed machine.
