2015 Values Voter Summit is a right-wing hate-machine conference in D.C.

The Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC) keeps track of various right wing hate groups and issues regular reports (HATEWATCH) on what they are doing. In stark contrast to Pope Francis’s uplifting spiritual message encouraging acts of respect, love and hope for our planet and all of its life forms, especially the poor, the immigrants, the marginalized and the mentally ill, they remind us that the merchants of extreme hatred and twisted evil are alive and well nourishing and celebrating their hatred of all people of good will at the Values Voter Summit conference at the Omni Sheraton Hotel in Washington, D.C. Their report is titled Anti-LGBT and Anti-Muslim Extremists Dominate 2015 Values Voter Summit Lineup.

Here’s a sample,

Brigette Gabriel, head of the largest grassroots anti-Muslim group in the country, ACT! for America, is scheduled to address the VVS summit this year. Gabriel has been described by The New York Times Magazine as a “radical Islamophobe,” and it’s not hard to see why.

In a 2007 course at the Department of Defense’s Joint Forces Staff College, she said that any “practicing Muslim who believes the word of the Koran to be the word of Allah … who goes to mosque and prays every Friday, who prays five times a day — this practicing Muslim, who believes in the teachings of the Koran, cannot be a loyal citizen of the United States.” The same year, The Australian Jewish News quoted her saying, “Every practicing Muslim is a radical Muslim.” Four years later, she claimed that “[t]ens of thousands of Islamic militants now reside in America, operating in sleeper cells, attending our colleges and universities.”

In response to the Syrian refugee crisis, ACT has increased its anti-refugee rhetoric and organizing. ACT recently started a Refugee Resettlement Working Group designed to push back against the resettlement of refugees in the U.S., claiming that terrorists are gaining entry to the U.S. through this policy. It remains to be seen whether Gabriel uses her speech to focus on the refugee issue.

Lieutenant General William G. “Jerry” Boykin, retired, who was a member of a special-operations counter-terrorism unit and now serves as the Vice President of the Family Research Council, will be,

moderating a panel called “The Islamic Threat — Women Who Know the Truth — the Latest to make SPLC’s Hate List.” The panel is a response to an SPLC Intelligence Report article published earlier this year profiling the most prominent women in the anti-Muslim movement.

Joining Boykin are Diana West, a syndicated columnist and the author of two books, and Clare Lopez, a senior fellow at the anti-Muslim “think tank” Center for Security Policy (CSP) run by rabid Islamophobe, Frank Gaffney. The three are among the most predominant pushers of the conspiracy theory that Muslims are infiltrating the federal government to implement Sharia law. West, particularly, has targeted Hilary Clinton’s aide, Huma Abedin, calling her “a veritable Muslim Brotherhood princess” with “privileged access to U.S. policymaking.”

These people are dangerous and determined because they are full of hate, evidence-averse and ruled by their paranoid fantasies and desire for power. I recommend everyone read the linked article, which contains substantial additional information of which we should all be aware. Believe me when I say it gets worse.

I remember a helluva knock-down-drag-out fight when I was on the board of directors of a social service agency in the late 1980s. At the request of the agency’s staff, I introduced a resolution adding non-discrimination against homosexuals to our by-laws (where we already had non-discrimination against religious or ethnic minorities, etc.) and there was a ruckus in the board. One prominent board member insisted that we would have higher insurance rates in our day-care and children’s programs because of increased likelihood of child molesters! I did the research (which I already knew pretty well, but that was pre-internet days) and pointed out that most child-molesters were HETEROSEXUAL males. I suggested that we could add to our non-discrimination clause a DISCRIMINATION clause against heterosexual males so that we would protect the children from being molested. They went bonkers on me; these First-Church folks who had founded the settlement house social services agency that was United Way funded.

We passed it, after a struggle. Our finance officer showed that it would not cost the agency a dime. I don’t really understand why the gay-fear-folks are such loud mouths. Their positions are just plain embarrassing.

    • I represented a lot of child molesters during my long career as a felony criminal defense attorney and with very few exceptions they were white male heterosexual faux Christians. I say ‘faux’ because they were fundies and I now realize that most fundamental Christians are Christians in name only. Their belief system is at odds with the teachings of Jesus, who was an apocalyptic Jewish rabbi who ministered to the outcasts of society: the poor, the marginalized and the mentally ill.

My friends in the National Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers (NACDL) reported the same experience. Considered together this is mere anecdotal evidence with no scientific validity. Nevertheless, it’s consistent with your research findings.

File this under, ‘There, I said it.’

In general, the more pompous and controlling and “moralistic” these guys were, the guiltier and more psychopathic was their behavior. I have had the misfortune of dealing with hundreds of them during the “child abuse” years. They preach to everybody (even if it is not Christianity per se that they are preaching) and they try to dominate everybody. That’s why they do not want to have sex with adults; they want total domination over the sexual “partner” so they victimize little kids who are so vulnerable.

What it takes, for a Western country to “go whole-hog Nazi,” is what they had in Germany in 1930s: widespread hunger and deprivation; widespread ignorance of the causes of the problems; lunatic right-wing rhetoric about how the weakest of the minorities were responsible for all the trouble; constant reminders of inequality and irritation; persistent inadequacy in government; a certain emotional laziness and narcissistic refusal to come to terms with social stressors; and FERVOR.

The whole set-up is here; we are just waiting for the tipping point to be reached while Faux Noose urges us toward it on a daily basis.

    • Hating on gays is another step in that direction. The Values Voter Summit disinvited the Boy Scouts from attending this conference because they eliminated their policy of excluding gay males (BSA used to function as an honor guard at these meetings). From Mother Jones,

The booting of the Boy Scouts from the event isn’t all that surprising. The Family Research Council, which sponsors the Values Voter Summit, has been an ardent opponent of the Boy Scouts’ acceptance of gays. Earlier this year, FRC head Tony Perkins lamented that the Boy Scouts were moving “away from their moral standard of being morally straight and clean and moving into open homosexuality.” He claimed that both the Boy Scouts and Girls Scouts “are done” as organizations because of their acceptance of gays.

A regular speaker at the event, Mat Staver, with the legal group Liberty Counsel [who represent Kim Davis, the homophobic county clerk in Kentucky], said last month that the change in policy at the Boy Scouts meant that “you are going to have all kinds of sexual molestation. This is a playground for pedophiles to go and have all these boys as objects of their lust. This is insane, and we need to literally abandon the Scouts because the Scouts, unfortunately, have abandoned us.”

Actually, Staver probably is a pedophile since only a pedophile would likely imagine that.

Meanwhile Ted Cruz appeared at the conference and talked about killing the Ayatollah Khamenei.

These people are crazy, dangerous and unfit for public office.

  3. Not very different from the antebellum and Jim Crow era disdain for blacks.

  4. Malisha says:

These ravings sound exactly like the Nazi ravings marking the end of the 1930s and, obviously, into the hatemongered 1940s in Germany. Germany, which had been the liberal palace of Europe. Don’t think it can’t happen HERE. It can and it will.

I think it already has, funny they have nothing to say about terrorist crimes committed by Neo-Nazi’s groups and other rightwing hate groups, murders, robberies, drug running, prostitution….it goes on and on you never see the media covering this only Chicago or Baltimore and they cover it as though the majority of AA or Latino’s belong to these gangs or involved in someway with them and it’s not true.
