Wednesday Evening Open Thread Discussion

Wednesday, July 9, 2014

Good evening:

Welcome to the Wednesday Evening Open Thread Discussion where off topic is on topic.

We have three articles for you today:

(1) Bioprospecting in Panama

(2) Texas Republican Party Belongs on Mars

(3) Freedom Industries fined $11,000 for West Virginia chemical spill that poisoned drinking water for 300,000 people

Meanwhile, the insanity continues as Israel is on a roll killing innocent Palestinian women and children along with a few members of Hamas in retaliation for rockets fired into Israel.

Do you think Pistorius will be acquitted or convicted?

The pool is open.

What’s on your mind in these troubling and difficult times?

This is our 1124th post. If you appreciate what we do, please toss some money into the hat. We can use it.

Thank you,

Fred

  1. I like this format because it is thought provoking and promotes wide ranging discussion, which is what I believe a blog should do.

    Agree or disagree?

“What’s on your mind in these troubling times?”

What a good question. I find it hard to focus.

Someone like Oscar Pistorius is running through his life as if there really are not any other important people out there in the world. Others are inconveniences. Some of the others, of course, can be used to good effect. Reeva was like that for a while but not for very long. So common. Our society, however, gives permission for some atrocious conduct towards the disposable “others.”

“The Israelis” are a source of great conflict for me personally because I understand their outlandish disproportionate rage, although I cannot follow that “understanding” to any kind of permission to go on these unrestrained rampages. Yet I keep flashing back to the times when I have been so enraged (about injustices, about bullying, about abuse, about etc. etc. etc. etc.) and I have felt sure that if I had an air force and an arsenal I would be out in the murder-skies letting loose with everything. I used to have a very satisfying fantasy of beating a judge to death with a baseball bat and then standing over his pulverized ugly body to be arrested for first-degree murder. The rage takes on a life of its own. I can see a mindset like that because I have had it myself.

But I heard an excellent radio interview of some Israeli children who had to stay for days at a time in a sweltering bunker while the missiles flew overhead and they were terrified. And then there were interviews of some Arab children from Gaza who were huddled in their home for days while the bombs dropped. And the Israeli child, asked, “Do you think there are children on the other side just as afraid as you?” and she said, “Yes, my mother told me that they are also afraid to be killed and so are we.” And then the young Gazan child was asked, “Do you think the Israeli children deserve to be killed?” And the child answered, “NO, they deserve to be protected, just as WE deserve to be protected.” These kids know right from wrong; their parents are less clear-headed about it all because they have lost something essential along the way.

It is so predictable. Create an outrage against civilians in Israel and you can be pretty much assured that all peace efforts will be skuttled within a minute and the war will start its macabre dance again and everybody will self-righteously kill and terrorize everybody else’s children.

    • The painful truth:

Just hazarding a guess but I’d say that Chism is somehow another version of Elliot Rodger, misogynist and violent, a terrifying but strangely culture-syntonic combination.

    • I think of them as proverbial canaries in a coal mine that should serve to summon us to reflect on how it’s possible for a child to become a serial killer.

The centuries old excuse that we can revile and dismiss them as rotten apples in an otherwise pristine collection of apples doesn’t do it for me.

That’s crazy thinking that can only produce more serial killers and suffering beyond imagining.

  5. Update from the Boston Globe on Philip Chism:

A Danvers teen accused of raping and killing his high school math teacher has been indicted in a violent assault on a female counselor last month at a juvenile detention facility, Suffolk County District Attorney Daniel F. Conley said Wednesday.

Philip Chism, 15, faces charges as a youthful offender of attempted murder by strangulation, assault with intent to murder, kidnapping, and two counts of assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, in indictments handed up by a Suffolk County grand jury, Conley said in a statement.

Philip needs more than lawyers, guns and money.

    Pistorius will be found guilty.

All this hate and violence in the world, Marvin Gaye had the answer:
