Happy Independence Day!

I spent the day watching and commenting on Gerrie Nel chewing up and spitting out Dr. Wayne Derman, Oscar Pistorius’s sports medicine doctor.

He testified that people with disabilities are 50% more likely to be assaulted than people without disabilities. As a result, they are more likely to fear being assaulted and more likely to startle and fight rather than flee (i.e., flight) since their disability prevents them from escaping.

His testimony is setting up the defense argument that Pistorius fired his gun without thinking after being startled by three sounds:

(1) the bathroom window opening and banging against the casement,

(2) the toilet room door closing, and

(3) someone hitting the magazine rack.

The problem with Dr. Derman’s testimony is that Pistorius fired four shots through a closed door when he was not actually threatened with harm by anyone and his conduct shows evidence that he was thinking rather than reacting automatically.

The Theodore Wafer trial is scheduled to start on July 21st.

Detroit may blow-up before then over the water and sewage shutdowns for delinquent users.

Since this is Independence Day, thoughts of revolution are in the air and on my mind. Here is an article by a billionaire, Nick Hanauer, titled, The Pitchforks Are Coming . . . For Us Plutocrats.

What’s on your mind tonight?

  1. The Dow went over the 17,000 mark last week setting a new record and hardly anyone cares.

    CBS reports,

The people who stayed in stocks have watched them surge recently, more than making up for the losses seen after the financial crisis that began in 2007. The stock market gains over the last few years have helped the wealthiest recover from the economic recessions. The richest 5 percent had 24 times as much money as the median household last year, The Associated Press reports. That’s up from 16.5 times as much in 2007.

The gains for the wealthiest serve to reinforce some economists’ views that inequality in the U.S. is getting worse. Economist Thomas Piketty recently told CBS MoneyWatch that the gap between rich and poor has reached “spectacular” heights.

Torches and pitchforks will be the ultimate reward for the rich and they deserve it because they are parasites who exploit the rest of us and the environment.

  2. Big trouble between Israel and Palestine as the autopsy results of the kidnapped and murdered Palestinian boy were released.

He was burned alive in retaliation for the kidnapping and murder of three Israeli boys allegedly by Hamas.

In a related incident, an American teenager who is related to the boy who was set on fire, was arrested and nearly beaten to death by Israeli police.

Say goodbye to the peace initiative and hello to all out war.

The only question is how many innocents are going to be slaughtered in this latest outburst of revenge motivated murders.

OMG there will be no way to reign in the violence now. Every step will be an intensification of the last outrage, in the biggest and bitterest sibling rivalry the world has recorded in history.

I realize that OP lives in South Africa. However, if one applied my logic, based on their crime rates, I feel my argument would hold.

  4. MKX says:

More non-rational manipulation of statistics just like the racists.

The rate of all forms of violent crime in the USA is 3.2%. So a 50% increase in this rate due to a handicap is 4.8%. However, it does not stop there. OP lives in and amongst the wealthy. So it is logical to assume that he benefits from the reduction in violent crime that those who live in that environment {Lake Mary, Fla being an example} of at least 50%. So he is back to square one.

Racists use this shit-logic all the time.

They focus on the ratio of relative low probability events within arbitrary categories to “prove” some sort of inherent tendency within one group.

And it will be used to defend Wafer.

The very high violent crime rate of Detroit and the fact that Wafer lived less than a mile from the border will be argued.

And the rate is high in Detroit. Probably about 10%. However, that means that 9/10 people from Detroit are not violent. It also ignores the fact that the War on Drugs creates individual players who commit multiple violent acts, thus reducing the rate of individuals within Detroit who are violence prone. And that rate is NOT in crime statistics.

And it also ignores that the victim was from Southfield, not Detroit.

And that the victim was a women, not a man.

OP is a petulant, vain liar just like Zimmerman.

My sense of this is that if he had a jury he would be acquitted because they would say, “well the poor guy probably thought he was being robbed.” But I don’t see that happening with a judge, and especially, this judge, who is listening to every syllable and hasn’t shown a single sign of fakery or foppery.
