82% oppose the war in Afghanistan

Monday, December 30, 2013

Russia Today is reporting the results of the latest CNN/ORC poll measuring support and opposition to the war in Afghanistan.

82% oppose the war

17% support it.

There is less support for this war than there was for the war in Vietnam.

57% believe we are losing the war in Afghanistan and a majority of Americans want our military to withdraw before the deadline in December, 2014.

Meanwhile, our government is attempting to negotiate an agreement with Afghanistan to extend the presence of our military beyond December, 2014.

Our government appears to be seriously out of step with we the people on this issue and other related issues, such as the NSA bulk collection of telephony metadata and our use of drones to fight the war.

Support for social security and opposition to cutbacks is around 84% for Republicans as well as Democrats and Independents.

A majority of Americans believe unemployment, underemployment and disparity of wealth are our most important and pressing issues. Austerity to reduce government debt has little supported.

Last week most people agreed that this Congress is the worst one we have ever had.

In a democracy the government should listen to the people and govern in accord with the views of the majority. A government that ignores what the people want will not last long.

This is our 828th post.

  1. To the International Movement to Free Lynne Stewart:

    We are elated to announce:

Federal Judge John G. Koeltl ordered Compassionate Release on Tuesday, December 31st, for renowned attorney Lynne Stewart. Judge Koeltl’s order was in response to the request from the Director of the Federal Bureau of Prisons presented to the court by Preet Bharara, United States Attorney for the Southern District of New York.

In signing the Order for Lynne Stewart’s release, Judge Koeltl stated, “The defendant’s terminal medical condition and very limited life expectancy constitute extraordinary and compelling reasons that warrant the requested reduction in sentence to time served.”

The Order further states, “Lynne Stewart shall be released as soon as her medical condition permits, the release plan is implemented and travel arrangements can be made.”

As we write, Lynne Stewart is FREE/out of FMC Carswell and is with her husband Ralph Poynter preparing for her long-awaited and jubilant return to New York.

A heartfelt thanks to all who stood by Lynne with letters, emails, petitions and telephone calls to the Federal Medical Center, Carswell, U.S. Federal Bureau of Prisons, Attorney General’s Office, U.S. Department of Justice, members of Congress, the White House and U.S. Embassies and who organized and participated in vigils, demonstrations, rallies and speak-outs throughout the world.

The enduring global movement for social justice has persevered – ever inspired by Lynne Stewart’s steadfast refusal to bend the knee, submit to coercion or official duplicity.

Your enduring support in Defense of Lynne Stewart embodies the injunction of Rosa Luxemburg: “In the beginning, was the deed!”

We are grateful to you all.

Message from Lynne earlier in the day before Judge Koeltl had ruled on the motion to free her.

    My Dears:

Well, the impossible takes a little longer !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! We learned this morning that the US Attorney’s office has made the motion for my compassionate release and that the Order was on Judge Koeltl’s desk. Since on the last go-round he stated in Court that he would treat it “favorably”, we are now just waiting expectantly.

The wonderful thing is that Ralph is here in Ft Worth for a visit and will bring me back to NYC with him. We don’t know when but the rules state that the warden has 2 days to let me go after he receives the order so it could be as early as Friday or a few days more. Whatever it is, I can’t stop crying tears of Joy !! I can’t stop thinking of all the marvelous people worldwide who made this happen … you know because each of you played an integral role. My daughter Z is already lining up Sloan Kettering and we will have to see if there is a probation qualification attached to the Order and how it will affect me. After that Ralph will start making arrangements to rent Yankee Stadium for the Welcome Home. … Smile

So If this reaches you before midnight tonight raise a glass of bubbly to the joy of all of us that the old girl is OUT!!

    Love Struggle,
    Lynne

This morning we attended a Methodist watch service in Ft. Lauderdale, FL. While sitting in service Tracy Martin came into the church sitting directly beside me. It was wonderful knowing Mr. Martin chose to be in church with his son at 12 midnight. After leaving, my partner and I noticed he appeared strained; America remember the family in your daily prayers. It really distressed me because it has been a long road… Florida Laws need to be changed. We are here for a few days but definitely will be leaving soon…

    • I often think of the Martin family at holidays and mentally wish them well. Thanks for sharing!

      Happy New Year, “Leatherheads!”

      • racerrodig says:

I do also. Everyone on Team Trayvon who encounters any of the Martin family MUST say to the effect that everyone on Team Trayvon wishes them well and has them in our prayers.

He was probably thinking about the last time he celebrated new years with his whole family.Never knowing the one of his sons had less than 2 months to live.

Changing the law never works. Those who enforce the law (police, Serino, Singleton, liars) and administer the law (Nelson, BDLR, Corey, liars, thieves, thugs, cheats, racist punks) and manipulate the law (O’Mara, West, the “witnesses” et al.) will make sure that no matter what laws are on the books, they cannot stop murder, rape, perjury, theft, abominations of every kind, atrocities +++, and the inevitable cover-ups that form the majority of our governmental “investigations” into their criminal wrongdoing at every step. We’re done for. Our courts have destroyed our attempt at democracy. We have nowhere to go but down.

if you feel you must take action. Always give the military 1 year. If they can’t do it within a year. Forget it. The generals get paid a lot of money . I’m tired of the 2nd,3rd,4th,5th plans after their first plan failed.

Once the government started selling the Heart and minds strategy in Afghanistan and Iraq that was a ploy by those who benefit from Military spending. I know this but cannot prove it.

    • bettykath says:

Add the oil and gas industry.

      • Boyd says:

I agree with you on that

      • looneydoone says:

Karzai is a former Unocal executive. Then there’s the (Unocal proposed) TAPI gas pipeline project scheduled for completion in 2014…the USA will never leave Afghanistan, troops/mercenaries are needed to protect the gas pipeline in perpetuity.
The pipeline extends from the gas fields near the Caspian Sea
        T*urkmenistan
        A*fghanistan
        P*akistan
I*ndia…where GE has built a LNG facility to receive the gas, and ship it out to the global markets

  6. bettykath says:

The war in Afghanistan should never have been fought. It was an unprovoked invasion. The toppling of the twin towers was a CRIMINAL act, not an act of war by a nation state, and certainly not by Afghanistan. This has been my position since 9/11/2001 when I saw the controlled demolition of two towers.

Who benefited by the towers coming down? Silverstein got lots of insurance money. Powerful white collar criminals got rid of a lot of SEC investigatory materials, including an extremely knowledgeable former FBI agent. What happened to the gold that was kept in the basement of one of the buildings? The Pentagon got rid of the financial documents relating to their misplacing trillions of dollars and the towers coming down totally eclipsed the announcement of the Pentagon being unable to account for the money “lost”. The MIC won lots of contracts to support the war. The oil companies got the military to do what was needed for the Caspian Sea pipeline. GWB got to be “war president”. All this after we suckered the Russians into “softening” up the defenses of Afghanistan. It broke the their economy but didn’t soften up the defenses since we armed and trained the Taliban which defend now against the new invader.

Who covered up the crime by destroying and removing all the evidence?

    Primary POI is Dick Cheney.

    • Boyd says:

Bin Laden admitted the deed and he was a guest of the Taliban.
No President is not going to do nothing.
Once it was known Bin Laden was the culprit every Navy in the world had ships in Afghan waters waiting for America to make the call. Even China has ships there.

Yesterday I was looking at old family photos and saw a few of my family with the President Tolbert of Liberia back in 1976-1977.. In 1979 he and thousand of Liberians were killed in a bloody civil war that lasted over 20 years. I cannot imagine the fear of knowing they’re coming to kill you and there’s nothing you can do only because you live in a country no one cares about. It’s why I was wanted Saddam, Kaddafi, Assad DEAD!

      • bettykath says:

Bin Laden said he didn’t do it. That tape and others were fake. Afghanistan offered to turn bin Laden over but the US REFUSED. Bin Laden was a CIA asset and the CIA station chief met with him in his (bin Laden’s) hospital room while he was getting dialysis during this general timeframe (I forget the actual sequence of events.)

        • Boyd says:

well don;t go to NYC and say that,,,,. My cousin worked at the next subway stop just happened to be 1 hr late that day. I know of one person an ex-co worker who worked in a nearby high rise and heard the bodies hitting the building, I’ sure there are nay stories tons of major companies had an offices in that area. It still bothers him. It was from people who jumped, the wind carried them into the building across the way.
These conspiracy stories don’t wash in this case. But as some Americans believe Roosevelt knew of the Pearl harbor attack and did not warn them this conspiracy will continue
          .

          • bettykath says:

It was a traumatic event for many, many people, but using that emotion to go to war with a country that had nothing to do with it is just as criminal as the original event. I’m truly sorry that so many people were killed and injured, including those who lost family and friends, and those who continue to lose first responder family and friends due to the toxicity of the site that the EPA declared to be safe. There certainly was a crime but the blame belongs on those responsible, not the handy scape goats.

            2. Theft of services OR (in the alternative) perjury (for the recantation that falsely alleged “misunderstandng”); and
            3. Child endangerment.

Strangely, her demeanor and her credibility in the videotaped interview were high. She does not seem to be making up any of her story. Her recall was good and her story was internally consistent and her affect was appropriate and she was not (seemingly) exaggerating or “performing for the camera.” I think she would have been a good prosecution witness and this case would have resulted in a conviction. The problem is that she is a liar and an opportunist and/or Fogen has something on her that is worse than what she has on him (think of THAT!) and/or she got paid off big-time by her fellow racists who did not want their idol tarnished.

I wish there were a way to make sure she was never allowed to get police services ever again in life. Just get that kid away from her! And away from Fogey-boy with his pedophilic tendencies and his teflon criminal history. To su

    • MDH says:

No guns in an establishment that serves alcohol has been part of conservative, God fearing American culture. Maybe the NRA types ought to read a book about the Earp’s vs. the Clanton’s. The law that triggered the OK Corral incident was that no guns were allowed in Dodge due to the propensity of drunken cowboys starting to shoot hither, yither and yonder. And bullets go through walls and people. IOW, one’s right to bear arms does not usurp my right to life. It is a public safety issue.

I grew up in a family of hunters who treated guns as a tool with serious danger issues. We took the military approach:

A gun is NEVER pointed unless it is to be used.

If that ass clown Nugent ever pointed at me in jest, he would either kill me or I would take it by the barrel, pull it out of his twig arms and proceed to bash him senseless. A gun pointed is intent to kill. And the rule of self defense is charge a gun and run from a knife.

A loaded gun is dangerous. So a gun should be locked and loaded only when it is to be used.

So I would never accept a “sorry I killed one of your loved ones because my gun accidently went off” as an excuse. Stupid people should pay for their stupidity.

      I could go on.

I actually went shooting in Northern Va and the cavalier attitude on display leads me to believe that the NRA went from sane, responsible, respectful education about the proper use of a firearms to a club that caters to childish, paranoid macho stupidity that is embodied by their poster boy – George Zimmerman.

That cretin violated/violates every sane rule of engagement that one who has a firearm SHOULD know by heart.

All they have done is make me question the right to bear arms.

      • Malisha says:

There are tests (including psychological tests) to be administered before people become police officers or join the military. It is obvious and well known that a gun in the wrong hands (like Fogen’s) is anti-Society and contrary to good law and order. So, also, is it obvious that alcohol and firearms do not mix without inviting trouble into the mix. Anybody who doesn’t go along with these very simple and obvious precautions is a bad citizen. PERIOD.

Remember the words to one of the verses of “This Join is Jumpin'”:

Check your weapons at the door,
        Be sure to pay your quarter;
Burn your leather on the floor,
        grab anybody’s daughter —

        This joint is jumpin,… (etc.)

CHECK YOUR WEAPONS AT THE DOOR.

Yep…The N.R.A. which we all know really stands for

No Real Accountability, is a joke at this point in time. This unadulterated SHIT they spew about the right to bear arms, blah, blah, boring blah is not exactly what the 2nd Amendment was created for. They have misinterpreted it, very conveniently I must say, to mean…..shoot 1st and forget about questions.

All of these murders lately are a shoot without provocation nor a simple “…who’s there?”

Our troops do not need to spend anymore time in afghanistan. I say bring them home now. Furthermore we should close some of our overseas bases.

  9. OT – Christi O’Connor posted Samantha Scheibe interview with police on day of altercation and arrest at her home on her YouTube channel and blog – “www.zimmermanverdict.net has obtained this video of Zimmerman’s girlfriend, Samantha Scheibe, on the day of boyfriend, George Zimmerman’s arrest. She describes a more violent dispute and a more dangerous Zimmerman than her frantic 911 call revealed. And then, she recanted. Why? My exclusive investigation exposing a huge motive that would impact the country. Tune in tonight.”

    • racerrodig says:

(7:20) “Why didn’t you call the police at that time?”

      “…because I feel like…..he always gets off…”

That pretty much says what we all, in the real world, seem to know.

Thanks to you, you collaborator/low-class idiot/whatever,

“Take the target off George’s back.”

I seriously doubt the accuracy of this poll though (as most others).

“The poll was conducted for CNN by ORC International between December 16 and 19, with 1,035 adults nationwide questioned by telephone. The survey’s overall sampling error is plus or minus three percentage points.”

This averages 21 people per State. How do they even know they were adults?

I agree the Government should take account of the views of the majority, but they’d need something a little more accurate than this to determine what those views are.
